Our Secrets
We believe
that being totally honest with everyone about
how to catch these incredible fish is the best
way to win friends, and friends will make for
having more clients. We understand that
word of mouth is the best type of advertising,
and we would love for everyone that wants to
catch salmon to have that chance. Whether
they can afford a guide or not.

Here goes:
#1
Many fishermen pop from hole to hole, wasting
their time gearing up and down. We stay put.
The fish are always moving. A dead hole can come
to life in a matter of minutes. Sometimes the
best thing to do is just sit on the hole, be
patient, and know that the fish are coming.
The trick is to know when to stay put, and when
to move on.
#2
Any given hole has its hot spot. You have to
fish the whole length of the hole to make sure
you are hitting where the fish are. Also, hot
spots change with the water conditions.
#3
As many good fishermen say "The early bird
catches the worm" We like to be the first guides
on the river. That way we ensure our spot in a
good hole. Also the fish and the river has
been unbothered since the night before.
#4
We are also, many times, the last guides off the
river. Alaska
has long daylight hours and we may as well use
them. We love to fish, ourselves, and in any
spare moment we are on the river finding new
holes and perfecting the way that any given hole
should be fished. There are also special
techniques that are used in rafting the rivers,
methods that we have been taught by being on the
rivers day in and day out. The more you
can study a river the better you will be at
catching salmon on it.
#5
The best bait to use for Kings is fresh or cured
salmon roe (eggs) rigged with a quarter sized
orange "corky" above the hook.
Sometimes a second hook is tied above the corky
so chances of hooking a King are
increased. (Click
here to see our egg curing recipe)
#6
A great way to
increase fishing time by decreasing rebating
stops, it to use a red or
orange mesh material
to contain the eggs in a pouch.

Here are three of our favorite holes and names we have
given the holes on the lower stretch
of the Gulkana
River.

#1
2 bends down from Sailor's Pit (for
directions to sailors pit feel free to call us), Derby
boundary hole. Fish the holes middle to the
first third from shore.
#2
4 bends down from Sailor's Pit, you will want to
fish on the right of the river from a the island. This is called "Jennies Hole"
#3
Half a mile down from Jennies Hole, there is a large
sandbar on the left. Fish from the
sandbar, casting far to the center of the
current.
They're tough to find, we know. That's why we'd
love to be your guide!
